Divine Spark
The Heroes of the Cairn fought for their future as Auril's titanic avatar and magical blizzard encircled and pressed the party to the boundaries of the Mythallar. There Auril made her last stand. With half the party turned into frozen statues, Oona cracked the ice of Auril's bust revealing the phantasmal glow of her rime-guarded divine spark, and Gadget fired a radiant shot into her heart. With the Eternal Rime giving way, the Mythallar's power surged through Ythryn and into Icewind Dale, beginning a great thaw. The raw spark of the winter goddess hovered before them. The Heroes of the Cairn chose to shatter it. On the destruction of the spark the heroes were blinded, deafened, and ultimately fell unconscious. Our druid Tetro awoke first to a pale blue sky seen from Ythryn floating above the thawing tundra. Auril's last remaining chosen, Vurnis, Aspect of Cruelty, sat cross-legged and waiting. The frost druid, once kept alive by Auril's will, asked him why he threw it all away -- why he did not isolate the mantle of divinity for himself nor preserve winter's heart for the future. He confessed that it wasn't the cold will of nature he heeded but the warmth of humanity. She didn't understand. Vurnis shakily arose and walked off as Tetro roused his companions. He turned as he heard the last champion of Auril fall dead. Kingsport the penguin is dead, but seems to have reincarnated somewhere as a human.
